COMMISSIONING FOR OATHS
For documents requiring an oath, affirmation, or solemn declaration.
You sign in the presence of an appointed Commissioner for Oaths, who verifies your identity, administers the required oath or affirmation, witnesses your signature, and completes the appropriate certification.
Common examples include affidavits, statutory declarations, certain court documents, insurance documents, government forms, consent forms, and other eligible sworn documents.

What should I bring?
Bring the complete, unsigned document and two pieces of valid identification. At least one should be government-issued photo ID. Requirements can vary, so send a photo of the document in advance if you are unsure.
Do you offer same-day appointments?
Same-day appointments are often available, including evenings and weekends. Email to request the next opening.
Where do appointments take place?
The preferred meeting area is near Chinook Centre or along Macleod Trail, usually at an agreed public café such as a Tim Hortons or Starbucks. Other Calgary locations, including homes, offices, and care facilities, may be arranged for an additional travel fee confirmed before booking.
Can you administer oaths for a society or organization?
Yes. Oaths and affirmations can be arranged for societies, nonprofits, boards, community organizations, and ceremonial appointments. Tell us the group size, venue, and purpose so requirements can be confirmed in advance.
How long does an appointment take?
Most straightforward appointments take about 15–20 minutes once identity and document requirements are confirmed.
What is the difference between commissioning and notarization?
A Commissioner for Oaths administers oaths and affirmations and takes affidavits and declarations for use in Alberta. A Notary Public has broader authority, including certifying true copies and notarizing certain documents intended for use outside Alberta or Canada.
Can you notarize every type of document?
Not always. Requirements are set by the organization receiving the document, and some matters require a lawyer or another specific professional. We review your request before the appointment and will tell you if it is outside our scope.
Do I sign before the appointment?
Usually, no. Please wait to sign until the notary is present unless you have been specifically told otherwise.
